Desired by the Alpha: Wolf Destiny 1

  Chapter 1

Olivia awoke slowly, warm and sleepy, reaching out for Blaize. When her hand fell onto the cold ground instead of Blaize’s strong back, she opened her eyes and sucked in her breath.

A wolf stood at her side, towering over her. Clearly in attack mode, he bared his teeth at her menacingly. Her mouth went dry even as she tried to cry out for help. She couldn’t make a sound.

The wolf started to circle around her trembling body. If it was actually possible to die of fright, it would already be too late for her.

When the wolf moved behind her, Olivia glanced frantically around the small cave. Blaize was near the entrance, his jaw clenched in silent fury, surrounded by three more wolves and a man with a dangerous glint in his eye.

“Call them off, Rohan. If you kill either one of us, it will mean war.” Blaize said, his voice edged with steel.

The man didn’t even flinch. For a moment it looked like he was going to attack Blaize himself.

“Stand down,” he growled, and the wolves around Blaize backed away. The one by Olivia barely stepped back, his unblinking eyes not leaving her even for a second.

Olivia sat up, pulling her coat tighter around her naked body. It didn’t do a thing to make her feel any less vulnerable.

Last night she had been wrapped up in Blaize’s arms after having spectacular sex. This morning she found herself naked in a cave with four wolves and a stranger that seemed to be a shifter too, without a clue about what was going on.

“You shouldn’t be here, Rohan. What do you want?” Blaize asked.

Rohan’s glare became a smirk. “I came to work out an agreement. I didn’t expect to find you, here, with a human.”

“She is not your concern. And Fyryne will not continue negotiations without the full council present,” Blaize said.

“And the leaders are to meet in advance, before that time,” Rohan retorted. “Or didn’t you know that?”

Clenching his fist, Blaize seemed barely able to keep from lashing out and belting him. Just once would have felt so good.

“We will talk further outside. Away from your guards.” The wolves bristled at Blaize’s words, especially the one by Olivia. Her heart pounded with the fear that if he decided to attack her, Blaize was too far away to intervene in time. And now he was going to leave her alone with them? This just could not be happening.

“Come. Guard this cave,” Rohan commanded the wolves. The three of them followed him out, the other one lingering by Olivia until Blaize came over.

The wolf walked away slowly, head held high as if to let her know he could come back for her any time he pleased.

Blaize knelt down beside her, taking hold of her shaking hand.

“What’s going on?” she managed to ask, her voice trembling.

“You do not need to be afraid. They won’t attack you. I can assure you of that.” Blaize stood quickly. “I won’t be long.”

“I…” she began, but Blaize was already disappearing quickly past the wolves gathered at the entrance to the cave.

Under the watchful eyes of the one wolf who seemed to have it in for her, Olivia held her coat tightly closed while she found her discarded clothes.

Trying to put them on without giving the wolf a glimpse of her naked flesh wasn’t easy. Just as she was finished dressing awkwardly and pulling her coat on again, there was a slight rustle as Blaize reappeared and all four wolves leapt away.

“What was that about?” Olivia asked him.

Blaize held out his hand. “Sit with me. There is something you need to know. I was going to tell you soon enough but since Rohan now knows who you are, this becomes the right time.”

Olivia took his hand but stayed standing, trying to fight the growing instinct that told her to run and not look back.

“What are you talking about?” she asked, at the same time wondering if she would have had even the slightest chance of escaping him on foot.

As if he could read her thoughts, Blaize stepped right up in front of her, capturing her gaze and not letting go. Even now, her pulse started to race from his nearness, desire for him mixing with fear.

“It’s okay,” he murmured, more tenderly than he had ever been with her.

Blaize was only wearing pants, and being that close to his bare, muscled chest and powerful arms was getting her hot. It was ridiculous, given the situation, but somehow she couldn’t help herself around him.

Olivia let him lead her back to the spot they had slept on. Blaize sat close enough that their bodies were touching, and even through her thick coat she could feel his heat radiating out, warming her up in more ways than one. But she couldn’t let herself be distracted when it seemed that she could be in some type of danger.

Shifting around uncomfortably, she tried in vain to find a spot on the wall that didn’t have sharp rock edge sticking out to dig into her back.

“What’s going on, Blaize? Who was that man?” she asked.

Blaize closed his eyes, a look of annoyance passing briefly over his features before he turned to face her.

“Rohan is the leader of the Raynere pack. They are being driven from their land in the south by increased flooding, and they want to move onto at least part of our land. While their need for a new home is valid, if Rohan had his way, they would drive us out completely.”

He paused, brushing his disheveled hair out of his eyes.

“And although we are trying to come to a peaceful agreement with Raynere now, our packs have a history of conflict.”

Olivia leaned against Blaize, beginning to relax for the first time since the others had invaded the cave.

“Negotiations are underway, but lately it has been rocky. Rohan does not want to concede anything, he just wants to take what doesn’t belong to him.

“And now that he has seen you with me, he will press the issue forward faster than it should go.”

  “Why? Because I’m human?”

His dark eyes reflected back on her fondly, but there was worry in them too. Olivia tensed up again.

  “Am I in danger?”

Blaize was silent for so long, her stomach twisted into knots.

  “Blaize?”

“I was considering the situation. Yes. You could be in danger. It all depends on Rohan and whether he is truly open to making things work for everyone as best they can. Or whether he will resort to violence without cause. That would be disastrous for both packs.”

Olivia sat back, Blaize started stroking his fingers through her hair. The simple gesture h
elped her calm down a little.

“But that has nothing to do with me,” she said.

“Actually, it does now. It has everything to do with you.”

Frowning, she tried to take it all in. “How could that be?”

“He thinks I’m the leader of the Fyryne pack,” Blaize said in a low voice.

“Why would Rohan think that?” she asked.

“Because he is.” Phyr stood at the entrance, staring at her and Blaize.

  Chapter 2

“Who are you?” Olivia jumped up, swivelling her head around in a panic, trying to locate the threatening wolves this man had brought along to guard him. Determined that this time, they weren’t going to intimidate her.

Phyr came inside, heading straight for Blaize. He was alone. Olivia exhaled.

“You haven’t told her yet?” Phyr asked, his expression stony save for his burning eyes. “Your human?”

“Told me what?” Olivia looked between the two men, exasperated. Were all wolves so secretive and so maddening as the ones she had met so far?

“Olivia, this is Phyr. My friend,” Blaize said, looking pointedly at Phyr.

Phyr barely even glanced her way. “What happened with Rohan?”

Blaize frowned. “You know he was here?”

“I was waiting nearby, keeping an eye out in case he tried to attack when you were outnumbered. I followed him for awhile to make sure he was heading out of our forest instead of deeper inside. Coming to us with four guards? He can’t be trusted. I had your back,” Phyr said, taking a seat on the ground.

Blaize stared at him for a moment, then turned back to Olivia.

“As I was starting to tell you. It has been foretold that I am to take over as leader of Fyryne,” he said.

“But he’s not going to be just a regular pack leader, inheriting the position from his parents like all the others. He’s going to be the super-leader. The kind that no-one has seen for generations.” Phyr’s voice held a more than a hint of sarcasm. Blaize glared at him, growling in the back of his throat, and Phyr looked away without another word.

“It is said that the future of this part of the wolf world will depend on the chosen leader,” Blaize continued.

Olivia was listening with rapt attention, eager to hear what she figured would be a good story. At least Phyr was keeping quiet for the moment.

“And I have been told, again and again, that it is my destiny to become this leader.”

“And he becomes such a leader when he finds his true mate,” Phyr broke in, unable to contain himself.

“Phyr,” Blaize began, a warning clearly evident in his tone, but his friend jumped up.

“I’m going. You’d best be telling your father about Rohan soon. I’ll see you back there,” Phyr said, pausing only to give Olivia an openly hostile look as he passed her on his way out.

When they were alone once again, Olivia spoke up.

“You have some...interesting acquaintances,” she said. “Will there be anyone else dropping by?”

“Probably not,” Blaize said, gesturing for her to sit down with him. She cuddled up close to him, but this time his body was tensed up, as if he was anticipating another interruption.

“What Phyr said was true. When I find the one who is destined to be my mate, I will ascend to being the leader.”

Olivia’s heart constricted. She knew not much more could happen between them than what had already. He was a wolf, and she wanted to settle down into a regular life. But still. She hated to admit that she had been falling for him and she couldn’t help imagining they might somehow have a future together.

Knowing he was unavailable for a fact crushed those hopes.

“Then why were you with me?” she asked, although she wasn’t really sure she wanted to hear him say that it had been just for some fun.

Blaize looked puzzled. “I just told you.”

She shook her head. “You said you have to find the mate that is destined for you.”

Blaize took her cold hands into his impossibly warm ones, squeezing them gently.

“Olivia, that’s you. You are my destiny.”

  Chapter 3

When Blaize shifted around to face her, his expression was more intense than Olivia had ever seen.

“You are my mate. I knew it from the first time I saw you, when you came and danced in the forest. When we were both hardly more than children.”

“That was you? Watching me?” Olivia said, bolting upright. She would never forget that night, or the wolf who had watched her without attacking.

Blaize nodded. “I have spent years trying to deny it. But I cannot. Unlike other alphas that have come before, my mate will be chosen for me. It has been foretold that you are the one meant to be mine.”

“I…what? What are you talking about? We just met…what do you mean it’s foretold?” she asked.

“It has always been said that this is my fate, that I will not have my own choice of a mate, and that I will know with certainty who that is.”

Olivia’s heart pounded in her chest as he gazed into her eyes. “Even though there has never been a wolf in our history who has mated with a human, you are the one, Olivia. And Rohan will not take kindly to that fact.”

So she was meant to be with a werewolf according to their legend. That was about the last thing in the world she had expected to come out of this situation, to say the least.

“What are you talking about?” Olivia blinked at Blaize. Could this all be an elaborate dream, one that was becoming more unreal at every turn?

“Did you just say I’m your chosen mate?”

  “Yes.”

“But, as it keeps getting pointed out, I’m human. How could that be?”

Blaize sighed. “It’s true. It’s nothing to do with me, or you. It has been foretold. I have spent most of my life trying to run from the confines of being the chosen leader. But I know I can’t escape my destiny.” He spoke calmly, as if he were discussing a foregone conclusion.

Olivia pulled away from him, shaking her head wildly. Could Blaize possibly be joking?

“That just can’t be right. I’m destined for…well, nothing. I came back to Wisconsin to start my life over again.” She rubbed her hands together, suddenly cold without his touch. “This has to be a mistake. How do you know I’m your mate? What makes you think that, anyway?”

  Blaize shook his head calmly.

“There is no mistake. I know it. Right down in my bones. It seems unlikely, certainly, that a human should be my mate. And I have tried to deny it too. But it is meant to be.”

Olivia scrambled up off the ground to stand in front of Blaize, his neutral expression infuriating her. “What does that even mean? To be your mate?”

“You would live with me, and—”

“Here?! In this cave? I can’t live with you here. I’d freeze to death, for one thing. And, I sure didn’t leave New York just to go live in the woods. I want to have a normal life. Just like everyone else. I can’t be the bride of a wolf!” Olivia started pacing back and forth agitatedly.

“Are you saying you don’t want to be with me?” Blaize sounded affronted, and she stopped abruptly.

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t want to be with you. That’s not what I meant, not at all. That’s not the part I would have a problem with,” she blurted out.

He looked at her, amusement playing at the corners of his mouth. Damn him, why did he turn her inside out whenever they were together?

“Olivia, this is not where I live. This is just a place that is used by anyone that is patrolling this area of the forest, as I have been lately. And whenever I am working here, that is when you come into the forest. No other wolf has ever found you here. Only me. That is one of the ways I know you are the one for me,” Blaize said.

“So just because you ran into me a couple of times, you think we’re meant for each other? I’m sorry, but I think there should be more to being a chosen mate than that,” Olivia said. She was trying hard t
o calm down, but the whole situation was incredible. And she couldn’t ignore the alarm bell that was ringing insistently in the back of her mind. If she refused, would he force her?

She should never have come into the forest. Not when she was a teen, not now. This was crazy.

Blaize’s steady voice broke into her tumultuous, spinning thoughts.

“We didn’t run into each other. Were you not drawn to me, as I was to you? I couldn’t have stayed away from you if I tried. And it’s not just that. With you, it’s right. There’s no explaining it away.”

A ghost of a smile crossed his lips. “For years, my father would tell me I would know for sure when I found the one who is destined for me. After being with many females, I started to doubt him and then I outright rejected everything. The idea that I had to be the leader, that I had to find the right mate. Until now. Now I know. It’s all true, and no-one can outrun their destiny. Believe me, I’ve tried.”

He stood and went to Olivia, catching her in his arms before she could elude him. She didn’t struggle away.

Meant to be? There was no such thing, or at least she hadn’t thought so up until now.

She looked him straight in the eye. “Why me? Why a human, if it’s not normal for wolves to mate with humans?”

“It has never happened before, not in any pack I have known or heard of. A human mate is absolutely unprecedented. That alone made me wonder at first if I could be wrong. But I am not.”

Blaize brushed a strand of her hair gently off her face. “Phyr could tell just from seeing us together. I think that’s why he acted the way he did before. Even Rohan could see that you are mine, and he doesn’t know me at all. There is simply no denying it.

“And that’s also why you could be in danger. I have to accept my leadership now. And if Rohan wants to get to me, he could threaten my mate. But as long as you are with me, I will keep you safe. He won’t harm you.”

Olivia leaned her head against his chest. “So, what? Just like that, I’m yours? This is a lot to take in,” she said.
